In order to potentially qualify for cash assistance, a family must have a child under 19 years of age. Families must meet all of the program eligibility requirements to qualify, including specific income standards. Families must also cooperate with employment and training, child support activities and other factors identified in their individual self sufficiency plans.
Cash assistance benefits are limited to up to 36 months. After a recipient has received Ohio Works First for three years most families cannot collect further cash benefits. Children living with relatives other than their parents may continue to receive assistance beyond the three year period.
All families receiving Ohio Works First are required to work at least 30 hours per week. Adults in a two parent household must work at least 35 hours per week or 55 hours per week if child care is available. All work participants are evaluated to determine their employability. Participants not currently employed and working required hours, are required to take part in approved work activities. Adults with certain disabilities may be required to perform developmental or alternative work activities.
All eligible Ohio Works First recipients receive medical coverage through a program referred to as ADC-related Medicaid Low Income Families. Low Income Families provide comprehensive medical care for all those eligible.
